April 2006 – Adelaide to Melbourne

Well, finally the mooring lines have been cast off and Bluestone has "left the building".

Our crew (Jim) arrived Friday and we waved goodbye to Adelaide amid coloured streamers and LOUD air horns on Sunday 2nd April.  Thanks to all who came down to send us off.

We had a quick sail down the Spencer Gulf and arrived safely with little drama and even a good feed of fish in Eastern Cove adjacent to American River on Kangaroo Island at around 0400 hours. A confused swell woke us (those that slept that is) at 0700 so we pulled up the anchor and went into American River beside the wharf to wait out the weather front that was promised.

The locals at American River are wonderful and we even caught up with extended family (thanks for your hospitality Lesley - lovely to meet you).  The oysters were wonderful too !  It's amazing how quickly you learn to 'shuck' oysters when you are desperate!

Had to send the crew 'upstairs'. That apprehensive look is because of the 57 foot height!

Margaret up the mast, 'just sit here a moment' said I

Friday 7th dawned with the promise that the front had passed and we were on our way - on our way to high rolling swells with chop in between and winds that were not favourable which made our 5 day passage to Western Port Bay a little uncomfortable. (Understatement!). Thank goodness Jim has a cast iron stomach or we all would have starved 'cause the crew wasn't going down below to try and cook!  Thank goodness also that sea sickness only lasts around 48 hours.  Oh yes, and then there was Bass Strait - blue skies, warm breeze - did someone say Breeze? 45 knot winds if you don't mind!  However, our very capable skipper steered a safe course and we arrived to a marina berth to catch up with family and friends (AND HAVE A LONG HOT SHOWER).  Ever had a shower on land after a week in seas that never stay still?  Interesting. Few more bruises from that!

So here we are for a week or more to catch up and prepare for the next leg up the coast.

We have been so impressed with the Coast Guard coverage from South Australia, they tracked us all the way to Bass Strait and even made us phone when we arrived.
