April 2006 - Melbourne to Eden

We tried to leave Melbourne on Saturday 22nd April but the tide, wind & swell had other ideas pushing us back into Western Port Bay.  We spent the night and half of Sunday anchored in Flinders (just inside entrance to bay) and left Sunday afternoon with favourable winds.  Well you know what happens to favourable winds, they change - and the next 3 days and nights were spent fiddling with sails and the motor trying to get the best from the boat.  Must say we did have a couple of hours of lovely sailing with slight seas and good winds.  It's cold in Bass Strait (Margaret is a master of the understatement).  We will not miss that bit of water; however, attached is a photo of a lovely sunrise on smooth seas – to prove it does calm down occasionally.

The traffic out there is amazing!  Ships going in all directions and gas and oil rigs in the middle of it all - anyway a safe passage was made into beautiful Eden, NSW with a good catch of fish to toast our arrival.  A couple of other yachts called us during the last night for a chat - a couple from Canada who had been to Tasmania and another couple from America.  It gets lonely out there on watch at 3:00 am and it's nice to have a chat.

After anchoring in Twofold Bay we lowered the dinghy and had a lovely walk on the beach (although the Captain got a bit wet launching us back to Bluestone). Here we stay for a couple of days to catch up on sleep and explore our surrounds then it's on up to Bermagui or nearby.  Think we will no longer predict where we are going to stop as we seem to change our destination en route – never did get into Refuge Bay or Bitangabee.

Not long after we had anchored in Twofold Bay there was a knock on the hull.  It was the skipper from ‘Huon Mist’ offering us some fish he had just caught which we gladly accepted.  Thanks, Lee.
